In very ancient times the horns of animals were used for this purpose. Cupping refers to an ancient Chinese practice in which a cup is applied to the skin and the pressure in the cup is reduced (by using change in heat or by suctioning out air), so that the skin and superficial muscle layer is drawn into and held in the cup. In some cases, the cup may be moved while the suction of skin is active, causing a regional pulling of the skin and muscle (the technique is called gliding cupping). This treatment has some relation to certain massage techniques, such as the rapid skin pinching along the back that is an important aspect of tuina (12). In that practice, the skin is pinched, sometimes at specific points (e.g., bladder meridian points), until a redness is generated.

Cupping is applied by acupuncturists to certain acupuncture points, as well as to regions of the body that are affected by pain (where the pain is deeper than the tissues to be pulled). When the cups are moved along the surface of the skin, the treatment is somewhat like guasha (literally, sand scraping), a folk remedy of southeast Asia which is often carried out by scraping the skin with a coin or other object with the intention of breaking up stagnation. Movement of the cups is a gentler technique than guasha, as a lubricant allows the cup to slide without causing as much of the subcutaneous bruising that is an objective of guasha. Still, a certain amount of bruising is expected both from fixed position cupping (especially at the site of the cup rim) and with movement of the cups.

Traditional cupping, with use of heated cups, also has some similarity to moxibustion therapy. Heating of the cups was the method used to obtain suction: the hot air in the cups has a low density and, as the cups cool with the opening sealed by the skin, the pressure within the cups declines, sucking the skin into it. In this case, the cups are hot and have a stimulating effect something like that of burning moxa wool.

In some cases, a small amount of blood letting (luoci; vein pricking) is done first, using a pricking needle, and then the cup is applied over the site. The pricking is usually done with a three-edged needle, applied to a vein, and it typically draws 3–4 drops of blood (sometimes the skin on either side is squeezed to aid release of blood). A standard thick-gauge acupuncture needle or plum blossom needle may be used instead. This technique is said to promote blood circulation, remove stasis, and alleviate swelling and pain. It is employed especially when there is a toxic heat syndrome and for a variety of acute ailments.

During the 20th century, new glass cups were developed (see Figure 1). Common drinking glasses have been used for this purpose, but thick glass cupping devices have also been produced and are preferred. The introduction of glass cups helped greatly, since the pottery cups broke very easily and the bamboo cups would deteriorate with repeated heating. Glass cups were easier to make than the brass or iron cups that were sometimes used as sturdy substitutes for the others; further, one could see the skin within the cup and evaluate the degree of response.

The glass cups are depressurized by providing some fire in the cup to heat up the air within just prior to placement. For example, hold a cotton ball dipped in alcohol with a pincer, ignite it, hold it in the cup, then rapidly apply to the skin; this is called shanhuofa (flash-fire cupping; see Figure 2). Sometimes, a small amount alcohol is put in the cup and lit; this method is called dijiufa (alcohol-fire cupping).

At the end of the 20th century, another method of suction was developed in which a valve was constructed at the top of the jar and a small hand-operated pump is attached so that the practitioner could suction out air without relying on fire (thus avoiding some hazards and having greater control over the amount of suction). Both glass and plastic cups were developed, though the plastic ones are not very well suited to moving along the skin once in place, as the edges are not entirely smooth and the strength of the cups is limited. The modern name for cupping is baguanfa (suction cup therapy).

In order to allow easy movement of the glass cups along the skin, some oil is applied. Medicated massage oils (with extracts of herbs) are particularly useful for this purpose. Since the cups are applied at room temperature, the indication of removing cold from the channels is no longer as applicable, at least to stationary cups. There is some friction generated with moving cups, so that there is a small but significant amount of heat applied by that method, especially if a warming oil is used as lubricant.

Generally, the cup is left in place for about 10 minutes (typical range is 5–15 minutes). The skin becomes reddened due to the congestion of blood flow. The cup is removed by pressing the skin along side it to allow some outside air to leak into it, thus equalizing the pressure and releasing it. Some bruising along the site of the rim of the cup is expected.

Today, cupping is mainly recommended for the treatment of pain, gastro-intestinal disorders, lung diseases (especially chronic cough and asthma), and paralysis, though it can be used for other disorders as well. The areas of the body that are fleshy are preferred sites for cupping. Contraindications for cupping include: areas of skin that are inflamed; cases of high fever, convulsions or cramping, or easy bleeding (i.e., pathological level of low platelets); or the abdominal area or lower back during pregnancy. Movement of the cups is limited to fleshy areas: the movement should not cross bony ridges, such as the spine. Following are some of the recommended treatment sites for various disorders.

There are 3 distinct stages of total recovery and each stage varies as to the length of time it takes. They do not always occur in the following order.

Stage One
This is the stage of the programme when you alter the diet and introduce the herbal, homoeopathic and other natural formulas as recommended. Usually there is wonderful progress.
Each day you feel better and stronger and each day feel less pain and disability. Every day is a progress day.

Stage Two
This stage is marked by apparent setbacks. Suddenly for no apparent reason symptoms return or you have a “healing crisis” of some description.
There may be mucus or what appears to be a cold or flu. Pain may be experienced in the body as toxins are on the move. These toxins do not just miraculously disappear. They have to go somewhere and as the eliminative channels are working better due to the programme, the body uses these channels to get rid of stored toxins and mucus waste.
Often healing occurs from inside out, from above down, and in the reverse order in which they first appeared. This is a time to be kind to yourself and support your body’s attempt to heal things that were mismanaged in the past.
Drink lots of water and try not to suppress the healing process by denying feelings or by using drugs to suppress. If there were joint pains before you started the programme and after an initial improvement you may feel these again as toxins move these are called “liberation pains” and can last from 1 to 3 weeks and sometimes longer. Skin symptoms can become worse or return for a time.
Stage Three
This is the stage of final recovery. This stage in itself is a series of smaller stages, sometimes with minor setbacks, but eventually should lead to complete restoration of health.

Things to Remember
It takesfive to seven times the normal amount of nutrition to build and repair than it does to maintain.
Complete mineral saturation is important both to build new tissue and maintain the new changes. I recommend New Zealand Herbals Mineral Max as the best complete source of minerals, vitamins and trace elements.
Eat 3 good meals per day. Sugar and junk food, coffee and tea deplete the body’s mineral reserves and will set back or halt your progress.
Nothing chronic heals in the body in less than three months. Even though symptoms may disappear, to achieve a longer lasting healing it is best to continue the programme for at least three months.

Hippocrates, the great father of the modern natural medicine, already recommended the geotherapy, and after him they have continued him other many that have seconded and practiced his teachings. The use of the clay to modify the bodies was very extended in Egypt. The doctor Greek Dioscorides, attributed him "an extraordinary force." The "the doctors’ prince", the Arab Avicena, as well as the celebrated anatomist Greek Physician, eulogized her in her writings, and previously, the Roman naturist Plinio the Old one, dedicated him a whole chapter in her Natural History.

Already transporting us to the modern time, they have been the German and Austrian naturopaths those that have impelled and up-to-date the therapies with the help of clay the same as they made it with the Hydrotherapy. It was the German Just who based the principles of the Geotherapy.

Preparation

To prepare it an enamelled concave recipient it is used, of earth, wooden, of glass, but never of metal neither of plastic material. He/she is gone adding water (or the components that we indicate below for each ailment), but it is always better than the mass it is a little soft, because it is but easy to add clay to thicken that dilutes to relent.

Leave you to rest without manipulating; it should not be played until the moment of their use. Whenever it is possible, expose you the recipient in the sun and cover with a gauze to protect it of the sludges.

It is necessary to subtract the clay to the direct contact with a too alive source of heat. The Steamed is the method but suitable to maintain intact its estates. If he/she gets ready in advance for several cataplasms, he/she should not warm but that the part that is needed. To prepare the cataplasm places on a table a cloth piece or a cellulose balleta, without colors, folding in two or four cuffs. By means of a spatula or a wooden tablespoon expands a regular layer of clay on the fabric. The thickness can vary of 2 mm, to 2 or 3 cm.

All clays are not alike.

What is the Mate Herb?

The dull Herb is a tree that grows in the basins of the rivers Paraná, Uruguay and Paraguay, in a South American region that embraces the area of the opposite triple among Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. The natives of that area, the Guarani, used this vegetable from old for their nutritious and healing estates. Today, the dull Herb is not only used in very extended form in those countries, but in others as the Uruguay and Chile, and in lathe of her a strong cultural tradition has been forged. At the moment their use differs in the old way of consuming it of the Guarani who macerated its leaves per days and then they drank that preparation like a healing one for diverse illnesses (rheumatic, intestinal, etc.) and as an elixir comforting that offered them force and energy.

The diffused consumption form is the infusion, which is carried out in two predominant ways: in form of tea, for that which the dull Herb is strained or the commercial packaging is used in form of the typical sacks in that he/she gets ready the tea. In South America it is very extended the ritual of the "it kills barley" like a social way of consumption of the infusion: in this ritual onlooker a small vessel is needed (call kills) made of natural, wooden fruits or metal; the bulb, a metal tube or cane with perforations in its inferior part that, when submerging it in the mate with herb, he/she makes the times of sherbet and strainer at the same time. The mate you "it feeds" (it is served) with hot water, but the version cold call exists "terere."

This habit, very widespread in an entire vast region of South America, he/she has very strong cultural connotations. The dull herb wastes away more for that tradition (there is a popular expression that he/she says: “we take some mates”) that for their many nutritious and healing estates.

In this case, the active principles are in the leaves, for what is carried out a crop in pruning form that doesn’t harm to the tree.
The Bright Red Berry

Yerba Mate produces clusters of white flowers that mature into bright red berries. For years, botanists tried and failed to get the berries to sprout in other lands. One of the reasons that yerba mate never grew popular in Europe during the colonial era was that yerba mate was difficult to cultivate beyond its native range. Eventually, local Guarani people showed the botanists how the berries sprouted once they were eaten by toucans. It turned out that the toucans had acids in their digestive tracts that broke down the seeds’ hard outer coatings, making them ready to sprout.

The Matto Grosso

The human brain consumes 25% of glucose and oxygen needed by the body
Hence to investigate the role of certain nutrients and plants such as Gingko biloba or ginseng on brain function at the growing desire to keep the intellect, memory, concentration and learning ability, or despite, the age. Seen the need for glucose as a preferred nutrient neurons (specialized cells of the brain), phospholipids and some antioxidants (vitamins and polyphenols) are the most studied dietary components to optimize performance and cognitive brain. This follows from the large number of patents by these compounds used in functional products that purpose. Science continues to monitor the neural response to other substances such as choline, complex vitamins (folic acid, B6, B12), omega-3 (DHA), gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and other more innovative as acetyl-L-carnitine or alpha-lipoic acid. The investigation has just begun.
But not only interested in enhancing brain function and cognitive processes that diminish with age, mild memory disturbances, care, slow implementation and solution of problems associated with normal aging or as a result of the stressful pace of life and that hamper the functioning in many activities. An important line of research is directed at examining the impact of further nutrient-deficiency-in infant brain development.

Specific nutrition from pregnancy

The most critical stages in the formation of the human brain takes place during the last trimester of pregnancy and continues until two years after birth. The adequate intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids of long chain (LCPUFA), particularly omega-3 fatty acids is decisive in this period for the creation of nerve tissue and the generation and transmission of information across neurons that henceforth , a greater impact on learning ability and concentration.
The adequate intake of foods rich in these nutrients (fatty fish, nuts, seed oils) by the mother will support the proper nutrition of breastfed baby. Later the child must be fed with these foods to achieve that end. Supplements of omega-3 (or of other micronutrients such as iodine, folic acid, vitamin B12) may be useful in specific moments of the lives of women, including pregnancy and lactation, and to improve infant brain development when born.

More and less healthy diet supplements

A diet high in fat, low in fiber and low in fruits and vegetables is not appropriate to ensure the good health of the brain. The latest scientific findings linking the Mediterranean diet with better cognitive function, neural and cognitive decline slowed, and a lower risk of suffering Alzheimer’s adults.
Cereals and pulses, food reference in this diet, serve as energy substrate (glucose) to the human brain, despite its small size (from 2% to 3% of body weight) consumes 20% -25% ofoxygen and glucose needed by the body to function normally. Besides these elementary substances, is shown the role of other nutrients in the maintenance of everyday cognitive functions like memory, concentration and quick thinking.
The intake of olive oil (monounsaturated fatty acids), oily fish and nuts (polyunsaturated omega 3 and omega 6) and moderate consumption of meat (vitamin B12), acting together as protective mechanisms. The daily habit of eating fresh fruits, vegetables and a handful of nuts provides natural vitamins B1, B6 and B9, and antioxidants (vitamins E, A and C), whose deficiency is associated with a decline in capacity cognitive.
Taken together, the support of a proper diet keeps blood glucose levels necessary for learning and memory processes, ensures neurotrophin levels (a type of proteins that promote survival of neurons) and the development and maintenance of the system nervous cell reduces inflammation and oxidative damage and cares for the state of cerebral blood vessels that enable the delivery of essential nutrients and energy to the brain. In short, a good diet provides an environment that supports the cognitive processes and decreases the likelihood of developing dementia associated with neurodegenerative or vascular origin because it facilitates effective transmission of neuronal signals.
Aware that the diet takes preventive value and helps to slow or prevent the deterioration of cognitive abilities associated with age, the question arises: is enough good food? The combination of a balanced diet rich in micronutrients and antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances, along with specific supplements, can act synergistically, so that new possibilities of intervention for cognitive impairment. But there are many unresolved issues: what are the most appropriate compounds and how they work? What time is indicated intake? Have you identified contraindications to its use?

There are no magic formulas

Environmental factors and lifestyle affect retention and cognitive functions: quality of diet, regular exercise, healthy social relationships and early mental stimulation and maintained with age. These are all indicators of improved brain plasticity: increasing the role of neurons, their connections are stabilized, it promotes the birth of new neurons and assists in their development and maturation. Therefore, the special contribution of a single nutrient is unlikely to have an impact as to compensate for a diet of low nutritional quality: There are no magic. Moreover, for the use of certain supplements to be effective in improving the nutrition and brain health should be addressed in early stages and not during adult life of the individual.
